In the innocent, pre-Chat GPT 3.5 days, most creative ideas (including 90% of ours) began as something called a ‘scamp’.

A scamp was, and still is, a simple sketch expressing a creative idea in its simplest, purest form. Often drawn with a Sharpie on an A3 sketchblock.

An idea started with a scamp and gradually acquired more definition with each round, both internally and externally as ideas were shared with a client or production partner. (Sometimes the definition was done, dear reader, mid meeting with hands fighting over a Sharpie and sketchblock.)

The virtue of a scamp was it allowed ideas to be debated without them having the feel of a finished product.

AI can turn a kernel of an idea into a glossy, campaign-ready visual in less time than it takes a kettle to boil. And polish is persuasive. Show a client something that looks finished and you’ll be debating the casting before anyone has asked whether the idea is any good.

It may sound quaint in 2026, but we think the scamp is due a revival.

At Fearlessly Frank we’re not Luddites. We’re integrating AI into our workflows to close the gap between good ideas and great execution. But we’re holding on to some old principles too: human judgment and accountability. They’re our currency as a creative company.

Here’s why we think scamps are due a revival:

  • Editing: a scamp is cheap to kill. A beautiful AI render can feel like there’s a sunk cost to it (even if there isn’t really) because of the polish, so people hang on to it which often closes down potential avenues.

  • Sameness: everyone has access to the same models, trained on the same data, producing the same slick output. A scamp strips that away and leaves the idea on its own to sink or swim.

  • Developing talent: We take great pride in developing our creative talent at Fearlessly Frank and many of our creatives have been with the company for years. We have all learned from drawing bad (or “sub-optimal” if we’re being kind) scamps, having them critiqued and evolving. Skip that step and we may get faster work today but fewer great creatives in a decade’s time.

So yes, we’re excited by everything AI can do, genuinely. But we’re also putting a little friction back into the process. Before anything gets polished, we draw it badly first. Because if an idea works as a scamp, it’ll work as a campaign.
