The Challenge
During Covid, Greene King came to us with a question that went beyond reopening pubs.

As the country’s leading pub retailer and brewer, running around 2,600 pubs, restaurants and hotels across England, Wales and Scotland, Greene King had scale few hospitality businesses could match. But the challenge was how to use that scale to create something more premium, more discerning and more emotionally relevant than a traditional pub-chain experience. The opportunity was not simply to improve the offer, but to imagine a new kind of local pub for an audience with higher expectations around design, service, food, drink and atmosphere.

The Spark
To sharpen the thinking, FF recruited a third-party expert with direct experience of running members’ clubs, helping us understand the behaviours, rituals and environmental cues that make those spaces feel valuable.

Using our Tectonics process, we developed a series of disruptive territories that explored how Greene King could move from national pub operator to curator of more elevated local experiences. The territory selected for development was the idea of becoming the first “members’ pub”, taking the curated atmosphere, belonging and attention to detail of a members’ club, and making it feel accessible in a local pub setting.

The Breakthrough
That thinking became Crafted Pubs: unique pubs, celebrating history and heritage in a modern way.

Rather than forcing every pub into the same branded format, Crafted allowed each venue to express its own character, architecture and local story, supported by a higher standard of food, drink, service and design.

We created the brand book and marketing plan to support rollout, including localised plans for each pub, digital profile management, citations, SEO and content, all delivered through a dedicated local content manager to ensure every site showed up with the care and consistency a premium audience expects.

The Impact
Crafted helped Greene King create a more premium layer within the estate, built around local character rather than standardisation.

With six Crafted pubs currently in operation and more set to be added later this year, the concept has given the business a clear platform for elevating selected sites while preserving their individual history, heritage and sense of place.

It gave Greene King a way to protect the emotional power of the pub while elevating the experience, the margin opportunity and the standard of marketing around each site.
